Nearly three-fifths of the employees at General Motors Corp. work for a company that makes cars that are admired, popular and profitable.
They just don't work in the United States.

GM has a bigger presence outside the U.S. than in it, employs more people in other countries than here, and actually makes money selling cars everywhere from Sao Paulo to Shanghai.

Its U.S. revenue has sunk 24% in the last three full years, but in the rest of the world, GM can boast a 28% increase.

Now, as lawmakers mull whether to provide billions of dollars in loans to keep the Detroit-based company from collapse, GM's global reach has become in many ways its most overlooked asset and a key to its ultimate survival.

Through the first nine months of this year 08, 4.3 million of the 6.7 million cars and trucks GM sold -- nearly two-thirds -- were purchased outside this country Usa.

And of the company's 252,000 employees, 152,000 (~60%)work abroad, building Chevys, Opels, Vauxhalls, Holdens and Buicks in 33 countries.

Yet the U.S. continues to be GM's largest single market in terms of revenue, with $115 billion in sales last year.

The automaker's China operations include 11 plants and roughly 20,000 employees, not to mention a $250-million research campus in Shanghai, with annual sales growth of at least 27% over the last four years.

The market was 500 trades away from Armageddon on Thursday, traders inside two large custodial banks tell The Post. Had the Treasury and Fed not quickly stepped into the fray that morning with a quick $105 billion injection of liquidity, the Dow could have collapsed to the 8,300-level - a 22 percent decline! - while the clang of the opening bell was still echoing around the cavernous exchange floor. According to traders, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, money market funds were inundated with $500 billion in sell orders prior to the opening. The total money-market capitalization was roughly $4 trillion that morning. The panicked selling was directly linked to the seizing up of the credit markets - including a $52 billion constriction in commercial paper - and the rumors of additional money market funds "breaking the buck," or dropping below $1 net asset value. The Fed's dramatic $105 billion liquidity injection on Thursday (pre-market) was just enough to keep key institutional accounts from following through on the sell orders and starting a stampede of cash that could have brought large tracts of the US economy to a halt. While many depositors treat money market accounts as fancy savings accounts, they are different. Banks buy a variety of short-term debt, including commercial paper, with the assets. It is an important distinction because banks use the $1.7 trillion commercial-paper market to fund their credit card operations and car finance companies use it to move autos. Without commercial paper, "factories would have to shut down, people would lose their jobs and there would be an effect on the real economy," Paul Schott Stevens, of the Investment Company Institute, told the Wall Street Journal. Cracks started to show in money market accounts late Tuesday when shares in one fund, the Reserve Primary Fund - which touted itself as super safe - fell below the golden $1 a share level. It had purchased what it thought was safe Lehman bonds, never dreaming they could default - which they did 24 hours earlier when the 158-year-old investment bank filed Chapter 11. By Wednesday, banks sensed a run on their accounts. They started stockpiling cash in anticipation of withdrawals. Banks, which usually keep an average of $2 billion in excess reserves earmarked for withdrawals, pumped that up to an astounding $90 billion by Wednesday, Lou Crandall, chief economist at Wrighton ICAP, told The Journal. And for good reason. By the close of business on Wednesday, $144.5 billion - a record - had been withdrawn. How much money was taken out of money market funds the prior week? Roughly $7.1 billion, according to AMG Data Services. By Thursday, that level, fed by the incredible volume of sell orders pouring in from institutional investors like pension funds and sovereign funds, had grown to $100 billion. It was still not enough to stem the tidal wave. The banks knew something drastic had to be done. So did Paulson. The injection of capital into the market was followed up by calls from Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson to major money market players like Bank of New York Mellon and State Street in Boston informing them that federal money was in the market and they should tell their clients the Feds would be back with a plan to stem the constriction in the credit market. Paulson knew the $105 billion injection was not a real solution. A broader, more radical answer was needed. Hours after Paulson made his round of calls to calm the industry, word leaked out that an added $1 trillion bailout of banks was being readied. Investors cheered. At about 3 p.m., news of the plans was filtering up and down Wall Street, fueling a 700-point advance in the Dow Jones industrial average through 4 p.m. Friday. By that time, Paulson had announced the plan. It included insurance on money market accounts, a move that started in quiet Thursday morning, when the former Goldman Sachs executive saved the country from a paralyzing meltdown. mgray@nypost.com

In one of the most extraordinary days in Wall Street's history, Merrill Lynch is near an 11th-hour deal with Bank of America to avert a deepening financial crisis while another storied securities firm, Lehman Brothers, hurtled toward liquidation, according to people briefed on the deal.

Bank of America has offered $50 billion or $29 a share for Merrill Lynch, people briefed on the negotiations said. Merrill shares closed at $17.05 on Friday.

The dramatic turn of events was prompted by the cataclysm of losses that has shaken the American financial industry over the last 14 months.

The moves came after a weekend of frantic negotiations between federal officials and Wall Street executives over how to avert a downward spiral in the markets. Questions still remain about how the market will react and whether other firms may still falter like AIG, the large insurer, and Washington Mutual, both of whose stocks fell precipitously last week.

Coming just a week after the government took control of mortgage lenders Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the magnitude of the industry's reshaping is staggering: two of the most powerful firms on Wall Street, Merrill Lynch and Lehman, will disappear.

The weekend's once unthinkable outcome came after a series of emergency meetings at the Federal Reserve building in downtown New York in which the fate of Lehman hung in the balance. In the meeting, Federal Reserve officials and the leaders of major financial institutions were trying to complete a plan to rescue the stricken investment bank.

But as the weekend unfolded, Barclays and Bank of America, which had both considered buying all or part of Lehman, decided that they could not reach a deal without financial support from the federal government or other banks.

As a result, people briefed on the matter said late Sunday that Lehman Brothers would file for bankruptcy protection, in the largest failure of an investment bank since the collapse of Drexel Burnham Lambert 18 years ago.

Lehman will seek to place its parent company, Lehman Brothers Holdings, into bankruptcy protection, as its subsidiaries remain solvent while the parent firm liquidates, these people said. A consortium of banks will provide a financial backstop to help provide an orderly winding down of the 158-year-old investment bank. And the Federal Reserve has agreed to accept lower-quality assets in return for loans from the government.

Lehman has retained the law firm Weil, Gotshal & Manges. The firm's restructuring head, Harvey Miller, also spearheaded Drexel's bankruptcy filing in February 1990.

As efforts to acquire Lehman faltered, Bank of America turned to Merrill Lynch.

Merrill's chief executive, John Thain, and Kenneth Lewis, Bank of America's chief executive, initiated talks on Saturday, prompted by the reality that a Lehman bankruptcy would ripple through Wall Street and further cripple Merrill Lynch, people briefed on the negotiations said.

Merrill's 15,000 brokers will be combined with Bank of America's smaller group of wealth advisers. The entity will be run by Robert McCann, the head of Merrill's global wealth management business.

Fleming, Merrill's president, will be president of the combined bank's corporate and investment bank while Thomas Montag, a former Goldman executive who started at Merrill in August, will head all the merged company's all risk, trading and institutional sales.

The leading proposal to rescue Lehman had been to divide the bank into two entities, a "good bank" and a "bad bank." Under that last scenario, Barclays would have bought the parts of Lehman that have been performing well, while a group of 10 to 15 Wall Street companies would agree to absorb losses from the bank's troubled assets, according to two people briefed on the proposal. Taxpayer money would not be included in such a deal, they said.

But that plan fell apart on Sunday, all but assuring that Lehman would be forced to liquidate.

The overarching goal of the weekend talks had been prevent a quick liquidation of Lehman, a bank that is so big and so interconnected with others that its abrupt failure would send shock waves through the financial world. Of deep concern is what impact a Lehman failure would have on other securities firms, insurance companies and banks, which have come under mounting pressure in the markets.

Even as Lehman and Merrill played out, the insurance company, the American International Group, was planning a major reorganization and a sale of its aircraft leasing business and other units to stabilize its finances, a person briefed on the company's strategy said on Sunday.

AIG became one of the focuses at an emergency gathering of Wall Street executives over the weekend, and was trying to arrange a capital infusion in the face of possible credit downgrades.

It was unclear whether AIG would succeed in its capital search, but a person briefed on the discussions said it was seeking more than $40 billion even as it tried to sell assets to shore up its financial footing.

Among the businesses likely to be sold is AIG's aircraft leasing business, the International Lease Finance Corporation. Founded in 1973, the business has nearly 1,000 planes in its fleet.

Investors, afraid that AIG would have to absorb further write-downs in its already damaged mortgage securities and collateralized debt obligations, have driven down the company's shares in recent days. The stock closed Friday at $12.14 a share, a decline of 46 percent for the week.

Slavná Tatra 603 se blíží návratu na silnice. V internetové anketě o nejoblíbenější vůz kopřivnické automobilky jednoznačně zvítězila před Tatrou 87, se kterou cestovatelé Hanzelka se Zikmundem sjezdili kus světa. Na třetí příčce se umístila Tatra 600, známější pod názvem Tatraplán.

Sotva se generální ředitel Tatry Ronald Adams před čtyřmi měsíci zmínil, že firma zvažuje výrobu malých sérií replik slavných modelů minulosti, okamžitě tím způsobil pozdvižení.

Nové vozy by nebyly zcela věrné dobové podobě. Podle prvotních informací Tatry by sice na první pohled vypadaly jako předchůdci, ale zároveň by splňovaly všechny moderní bezpečnostní i provozní požadavky.

Kromě hlasů z internetu nyní v Kopřivnici zpracovávají dvacet tisíc hlasovacích lístků, které sesbíralo muzeum Tatry. Podle předběžných informací by se ale na konečném pořadí už moc měnit nemělo.

K internetovým výsledkům hlasování a hlasům sesbíraným v kopřivnickém technickém muzeu nakonec usednou a vše posoudí tatrováčtí manažeři.

Veřejnost se do internetového hlasování o nejoblíbenější tatřičku vrhla s vervou - přišlo přes 200 tisíc hlasů - a podle mnohých se tak jen potvrdil fakt, že Tatru spousta lidí vnímá jako české "rodinné stříbro“.

V anketě přesvědčivě zvítězila Tatra 603, která by prý jako nová přišla na zhruba 50 tisíc dolarů, tedy v přepočtu asi na 800 tisíc korun. Za podobnou sumu je dneska k mání lepší Škoda Octavia Combi. Přesto se nikdo nebojí, že by nebyl zájem. "Hlavně zahraniční sběratelé jsou po tatrovkách lační," upozornila předsedkyně Tatra Veteran Car Clubu Alena Čípová.

Sériová výroba osobních automobilů v příborském závodu Tatry skončila v roce 1998. O zániku kvůli údajné nerentabilitě a neperspektivnosti rozhodl tehdy mocný šéf Škody Plzeň Lubomír Soudek, který kopřivnickou firmu několik let vlastnil.

Veřejnost bude mít důležité slovo při hlasování
"Hlasování veřejnosti samozřejmě při rozhodování o modelech vhodných pro výrobu sehraje významnou roli," potvrdil mluvčí Tatry Vladimír Bystrov.

Vladimír Bystrov ale upozorňuje, že technici ještě musí posoudit, jak původní karoserii napasovat na moderní podvozek a vyřešit mnoho dalších technických záludností.

"Proto nelze první kusy očekávat letos nebo příští rok. Čas nás netlačí," dodal Bystrov.

Repliky vábí už nyní
Po zmínce o výrobě slavných modelů přišly Tatře první objednávky. Ačkoliv do případné výroby stále schází několik let, už se Tatře ozvali první lidé chtiví starých aut v novém kabátě. "Je to tak, záhy přišly první objednávky, což jen dokládá, že jde o velmi zajímavý nápad," řekl mediální zástupce Tatry Vladimír Bystrov.

"Jsem přesvědčen, že pro repliky starých modelů osobních vozů značky Tatra existuje velmi dobrý trh,“ řekl už dříve šéf Tatry Adams, který však upozornil, že by se jednalo jen o limitovanou sérii maximálně čtyř stovek kusů ročně.

"Záměrem není nová divize či významné tržby a zisky, ve skutečnosti chceme, aby se jméno Tatra objevilo na trzích po celém světě,“ vysvětlil generální ředitel a zdůraznil, že by novinka určitě nešla na úkor nynější výroby nákladních vozidel.

Podle ředitele muzea tatrovek Lumíra Kaválka se zřejmě nepodaří zajistit pro nové vozy typický vzduchem chlazený motor vzadu. "Kdo chce s těmito automobily jezdit často po silnicích, neobejde se například bez moderního podvozku," vysvětlil.

Pro Kaválka není vítězství "šestsettrojky" překvapením. "Je to poslední aerodynamický vůz Tatry a přitom nevymizel z pamětí lidí," vysvětlil Kaválek s tím, že on by radši volil méně obvyklou tatrovku, například T 90, kterých se kdysi vyrobily jen dva prototypy.

Tater 603 bylo v kopřivnické automobilce v letech 1955 až 1975 vyrobeno přes dvacet tisíc kusů. Cena se pohybovala těsně nad částkou sto tisíc korun, později se dostala k dvousettisícové hranici. Na limuzínu ale měli nárok jen straničtí představitelé, podniky nebo zasloužilí pracovníci. "Občas se Tatře 603 říkalo papalášský vůz, ale to nemám rád. Auto za nic nemohlo," uvedl znalec historie Tatry Karel Rosenkranz.

Čtrnáct mrtvých a na dvě desítky zraněných si v neděli ráno vyžádala vážná nehoda slovenského autobusu v Chorvatsku. Potvrdil to mluvčí slovenského ministerstva zahraničí Ján Škoda s odvoláním na chorvatskou policii. Příčiny nehody se stále vyšetřují, podle policie mělo vozidlo buď defekt, nebo řidič, který je mezi oběťmi, upadl do mikrospánku.

9/11 building brought down by fire, not explosives, report says

Fires in the 47-story office tower at the edge of the World Trade Center site undermined floor beams and critical structural columns, federal investigators concluded Thursday, as they attempted to curb still-rampant speculation that explosives or fuel fires had been responsible for the collapse of the building on Sept. 11, 2001.

The long-delayed report by engineers at the National Institute of Standards and Technology in suburban Washington is intended to solve one of the lingering questions about the 2001 attacks: Why did the building at 7 World Trade Center fall, if it was not hit by an airplane?

"Heating of floor beams and girders caused a critical support column to fail," said Shyam Sunder, the lead investigator. "Video and photographic evidence, combined with detailed computer simulations, show that neither explosives nor fuel oils played a role."

No one died when 7 World Trade Center fell, nearly seven hours after the center's twin towers collapsed. But the fall of the adjacent tower - once home to branch offices of the CIA, the Secret Service and the emergency operations center of the New York City mayor - is cited in hundreds of books and Internet sites as perhaps the most compelling evidence that an insider secretly planted explosives, intentionally destroying the tower.

It is the first skyscraper in modern times to collapse primarily as a result of a fire.

Mainstream engineers and government officials have rejected the speculation as ridiculous. But national polls have shown that perhaps as many as one in seven Americans believes that the destruction of the World Trade Center towers was an inside job.

The investigators determined that debris from the falling twin towers ignited fires on at least 10 floors at 7 World Trade Center, which was about 400 feet, or 120 meters, north of where the two tallest buildings in the city once stood. The blazes burned out of control for six hours. The city fire department, devastated by the collapse of the twin towers, abandoned its efforts to extinguish the fire and the sprinkler system was incapacitated.

The heat from these fires, the investigators said, caused the beams on the lower floors of the east side of the tower to expand, ultimately causing a girder on the 13th floor to disconnect from a critical interior column that supported the building's long floor spans. Once the 13th floor gave way, a cascade of floor failures led to the overall collapse of the tower.

Skeptics have questioned whether explosives were planted at 7 World Trade Center, as well as the twin towers and the Pentagon, as the Bush administration was seeking a justification to invade Iraq and Afghanistan. What started as a small number of such conspiracy theorists has ballooned into a movement of sorts, largely fed by Internet sites that promote the theories.

"Seven World Trade Center is one of the key points of evidence, one of the smoking guns," said Richard Gage, a California architect who is leader a group called Architects and Engineers for 9/11 Truth. "There have been much hotter, longer lasting and larger fires in skyscrapers that have not fallen down."

The engineers also examined whether diesel fuel tanks in the building - to power the mayor's emergency operations center and other government offices - might have been a fuel source that caused the collapse. The investigators determined, partly on the basis of computer models and videos of smoke coming from the tower, that the heat generated from any fuel-fed fires would not have been enough to cause the collapse.

Téměř na chvostu celé Evropské unie jsou platy českých pracovníků, které jsou závislé na kolektivním vyjednávání. Po započtení inflace totiž reálná mzda českých pracovníků v loňském roce klesla o 1,3 procenta.

Hůře se loni vedlo už jen zaměstnancům v Rakousku, Španělsku, Slovinsku a na Kypru. Vyplývá to ze statistiky evropské nadace Eurofound, která má na starost zlepšování pracovních podmínek.

Naopak největší růst zaznamenali zaměstnanci v Lotyšsku. Průměrný plat, jehož výše je závislá na kolektivní smlouvě, tam reálně vzrostl o 18,3 procent. Pomyslnou stříbrnou příčku obsadili Litevci s 13procentním růstem, bronzoví byli Rumuni s růstem 12,2 procenta.

Slováci jsou na tom lépe

Špatně si nevedou ani naši východní sousedé - Slováci, kde reálná mzda vzrostla o 3,7 procenta, což je v rámci celé Evropské unie nadprůměrný výsledek.

Z platů zaměstnanců loni výrazně "brala" právě inflace. V roce 2006 mzda reálně rostla ještě ve všech zemích EU s výjimkou Maďarska, Slovinska a Británie, loni už ale klesala hned ve 12 členských státech, v ostatních růst až na pár výjimek zpomalil.

Český výsledek je tak v rámci nových členských zemí unie značně podprůměrný. Ve všech 12 státech, které do Evropské unie vstoupily v roce 2004 nebo 2007, totiž mzdy rostly v průměru o pět procent. V celé EU to bylo o 1,7 procenta.

Nové členské státy vedou

Česká republika se společně s Maďarskem, Slovinskem, Kyprem a Maltou řadí mezi nové členské státy, kde byl růst mezd ještě nižší než průměrný růst ve starých členských státech.

V loňském roce byl v nových členských státech Evropské unie průměrný růst mezd očištěný o inflaci 25krát vyšší než ve starých členských státech. Přitom ještě v roce 2006 byl "jen" 6,5krát vyšší. Pokud jde o růst nominálních mezd, není tento rozdíl tak výrazný.

Ve skupině starých členských států je přitom jenom sedm zemí z celkových 15, kde mzdy rostly loni nadprůměrně, a to Řecko, Švédsko, Finsko, Velká Británie, Irsko, Dánsko a Nizozemsko.
